چکیده

The relationship between variability, luminosity and redshift in the South Galactic Pole QSO sample is examined in an eeort to disentangle the eeects of luminosity and redshift in the amplitude of the optical variations. The anticorrelation between variability and luminosity found by other authors is connrmed. Our analysis also supports claims that variability increases with redshift, most likely due to an anticorrelation between variability and wavelength. In particular, our parametric ts show that the QSO variability-wavelength relation is consistent with that observed in low-luminosity nearby active galactic nuclei. The results are used to constrain Poissonian-type models. We nd that if QSO variability results from a random superposition of pulses, then the individual events must have B-band energies between 10 50 and a few times 10 51 erg and timescales of 2 yr. Generalized Poissonian models in which the pulse energy and lifetime scale with luminosity are also discussed.

QSO variability: probing the Starburst model

The consistency of the Starburst model for AGN is tested using the optical variability observed in large data bases of QSOs. Theoretical predictions for the variability– luminosity relationship and structure function are presented and compared with observations. If QSOs follow a variability–wavelength relation as that observed in nearby AGN, the model proves successful in reproducing the main c...

Constraints on the correlation between QSO luminosity and host halo mass from high-redshift quasar clustering

Recent measurements of high-redshift QSO clustering from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey indicate that QSOs at z ∼ 4 have a bias 〈b〉 ≃ 14. We find that this extremely high clustering amplitude, combined with the corresponding space density, constrains the dispersion in the L−Mh relation to be less than 50% at 99% confidence for the most conservative case of a 100% duty cycle. This upper limit to t...

The 2 dF - SDSS LRG and QSO Survey : The QSO luminosity function at 0 . 4 < z < 2 . 6 .

We present the QSO luminosity function of the completed 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO (2SLAQ) survey, based on QSOs photometrically selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging data and then observed spectroscopically using the 2dF instrument on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We analyse 10637 QSOs in the redshift range 0.4 < z < 2.6 to a g-band flux limit of 21.85 (extinction corrected) and an absolu...

Extensions around Z = 2 Qsos

Based on an R-band imaging survey of 6 high redshift (z 2) and high luminosity (M B < 28 mag) QSOs, we report the detection of extensions in two radio-quiet and one radio-loud QSO. The extensions are most likely due to the host galaxies of these QSOs, with luminosities of at least 3 7 per cent of the QSO luminosity. The most likely values for the luminosity of the host galaxies lie in the range...

X-ray QSO evolution from a very deep ROSAT survey

In the deepest optically identified X-ray survey yet performed, we have identified 32 X-ray selected QSOs to a flux limit of 2×10 erg cm s (0.5-2 keV). The survey, performed with the ROSAT PSPC, has 89% spectroscopic completeness. The QSO log(N)-log(S) relation is found to have a break to a flat slope at faint fluxes. The surface density of QSOs at the survey limit is 230±40 per square degree, ...
